Mercy Health Systems enlisted Keating Building Corporation’s construction management expertise for its multi-phased “fast-track” renovation’s program designed to create new open heart operating suites, as well as expanded intensive care units and administrative areas.

The overall scope of work included:
  • Upgrades to all renovation areas for fire stopping and other life safety code items including sprinkler, fire alarm and smoke detection systems. The sprinkler system for the existing 12-room O.R. suite was performed at night after the O.R.’s were shut down. Keating provided medical gas services, and emergency power, as well as coordinated the extension of the existing pneumatic tube system into renovated areas.
  • Renovations to existing spaces for two new Open Heart Operating Suites complete with new roof top HVAC units; existing Operating Room Support/Office areas including Anesthesia Room, Staff Lockers and Break Room, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU); and new Heart Center Hospitality Area with Lounge and Restrooms.
  • Seven existing Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) rooms were renovated and converted into five new Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) rooms
  • New offices constructed for Cardiac Administration.

The new Open Heart O.R. and all support spaces were phased for completion and in service within five months from the start of construction. All work was completed within eight months from commencement of construction.
