  Robert C. Nix Federal Courthouse
Philadelphia, PA

An Art Modern building constructed between 1937 and 1939, the Nix Federal Building is located in the center of Philadelphia’s Market East corridor and is most recognized as a United States Post Office. Under this recent reconstruction, the Nix Courthouse has regained its original function and primarily serves as a Federal Courthouse and Office Building, with a Postal Service presence.

The overall scope of the work encompassed renovation of historic courtrooms and lobbies, fit-out of existing shell space for Federal courts and government agencies, as well as construction of a new interior parking garage and elevators. The work also included removal of asbestos-containing material (ACM) throughout the structure.

Keating’s team applied its expertise with historic restoration projects and restored seven Courtrooms and Judges Chambers to mirror the original historic design. Existing historic marble panels at the First Floor Lobby and Second Floor corridors were reconfigured for reuse in these areas. Keating performed the Nix renovation work in a fully occupied public building. Intensive coordination of the work and early planning allowed for early occupancy by the National Archives and U.S. Bankruptcy Courts.
